Ottawa Soaring Seminar

This past weekend the team members participated in a Soaring Seminar in Ottawa.  The seminar was attended by 46 pilots from the Ottawa and Montreal area clubs and a small contingent made the drive from the Toronto area as well.

Dave made a presentation on Weather Forecasting from Internet sources including the relatively new XC Skies soaring weather website.
Willem presented Macready Theory as applied to the inter-thermal and final glide modes of flight
Jerzy presented techniques to optimize cross-country speed while on task.

The seminar was well received by all who attended and many took away new concepts to apply in improving their own cross-country flying.

Thanks to all who attended.

The glider, the car and the drive

I have been able to make arrangements with the good people at Schleicher to rent the same ASW-27 as I flew in Luesse in 2008.  The glider is equipped with an LX7000 flight computer, and this to me is one of the critical items - I don't need to be thinking about learning another computer during the contest!

I have also made preliminary arrangements to borrow the same car as last time from a friend who lives in the Frankfurt area.  After landing in Frankfurt and picking up the car and glider we have a 1200 km drive through Germany, Austria and Hungary to get to Szeged.  Click here to see the google map of the trip from the Schleicher factory in Poppenhausen to the contest site in Szeged.

The trip will also include a short detour down to Munich to pick up Joerg at the airport before heading into Austria.

TOW VEHICLE FOR THE WORLDS

One of the challenges in Europe is to find a car with a tow hitch. Rental companies offer only very expensive cars with a factory installed hitch, but they restrict entry in to the former East Block countries . After a long search and thanks to SOSA's pilot Jan Zachemski I was able to find a private company in Poland that will rent me Jeep Liberty with a tow hitch.
I plan to arrive in Krakow Poland on July 17th http://www.krakow.pl/en/
where I have to pick up Jeep and drive 300 km to Jelenia Gora.
Then I will pick up glider from storage at the local gliding club and continue 800 km to Szeged Hungary via Czech Republic

WestJet sponsors the Canadian Team

Thanks to John Mulder, WestJet has provided a round trip for two people to any WestJet destination as a fund-raiser for the team.  The vouchers have a maximum value of $4600 and can be used any time until Jun 2011.  No taxes - no surcharges - these vouchers include all costs.  Did you know that WestJet flies to Hawaii?

We plan to hold a draw for the vouchers during the 2010 Nationals in North Battleford.

John will be at the SAC AGM in Silverstar and the Alberta safety seminar where you can enter the draw and Dave, Jerzy and Willem will be at the Canadian Team Seminar in Ottawa where you may also enter in the draw.

Stay tuned for more details.
